Today, I received an application for a role I am recruiting for from a 2nd year BA student. It’s an intern role and obviously, applicants will not have much experience. However, I am amazed at the logic of writing under the heading ‘Other Skills & Activities’ - University Hockey Team. Full Stop. Period. And ‘so what’ runs through my head. Whilst it is an activity and correctly headed, what does it contribute in ‘added value’ to the application? Perhaps an explanation using keywords such as - a team player, goal orientated [pun], determination, commitment, etc. would have been useful.
I see these kinds of statements all too often. They offer no value, without explaining the skill you are offering from the activity. While I am on about hockey... I remember many years ago, I received a CV from someone who had taken half of the second page, (that’s quarter of the CV) talking about her passion and commitment to hockey. In our conversation, I suggested that she forget about working in international development and follow her passion – get a job related to hockey! Don’t day dream – follow your passion. To find that, read my mission page.
